Almost ther Marcus Herse IMAGES
Reception: Saturday, August 9, 7–10PM
With Almost ther, Marcus Herse continues his investigation of the human architectonic environment and alludes to questions of individual experience, mobility, and control.
Serving as the centerpiece of the exhibition, the video work Almost ther (Sunset) invites the viewer to take a seat in the back of the artist’s ‘92 Honda Civic and drive through the Glendale Galleria parking garage at dusk. Liberated from the arduous task of searching for a parking space, the structure is declared an event, and here, the viewer is invited to contemplate the light and shadow play of the setting sun filtered through the shells of the car and the architecture. The empirical footage seamlessly captures a clinical mood that oscillates between ghastly and ghostly. There are sporadic consumers walking to or from their vehicles, mechanically operating without agency. There is the occasional gust of wind, stuttering and stammering of shopping carts, and honking of horns, creating a sparse soundtrack, alluding to some sense of action that is never quite fulfilled, but steadily anticipated.
Accompanying the video is a selection of beaded car seat covers painted with improvisations of road traffic signs that are simultaneously too stiff and too limp to be truly comforting—echoing the surprisingly surreal sentiment of the video.
